Looking at Images, Vol 2

Based on the success of Brooks' 2013 book of the same title (Looking at Images), we are in the process of preparing a second volume using all new images and commentary. Below, you will find PDFs of the new material that we are preparing for Looking at Images, Vol 2 — an opportunity to access these thought-inducing commentaries as Brooks writes them, before the book is published!

About the commentaries

The focus of Looking at Images is, well, images to more deeply explore selected photographs published in LensWork and LensWork Extended. We'll examine individual photographs to discuss aspects of their content, context, selections, and composition — and to gain a better overall appreciation of the work. Looking at Images is a study aid, a serious look at an image, a platform to think about photography and more precisely specific photographs. It's about images and ideas and most importantly, ideas that can help you in your creative endeavors.

These are not critiques! As Brooks has often said, "I fundamentally don't believe in photographic critiques. Most critiques start off with the most deadly form of comment that you can make about an image which is I like it or I don't like it. There is almost nothing of less importance for a photographer to hear when you're offering a critique. Worse, is when the reviewer begins If this were my work … which of course, it isn't! Instead, I look at what what the photograph communicates and how it does so. It seems to me this is the essence of making a photograph."

And now, on to the second volume!
