Finding the Picture with Brooks Jensen

Finding Other Than the Cliché

West Lake in Hangzhou, China is one of the most famous of all scenic locations in China. Pictures of this bridge abound. My host was very excited to have me see this famous bridge and took me to this spot so I could make the iconic photograph. I obliged him, but found the nets in for foreground much more interesting to my eye. To the Chinese, the nets are an insignificant element, but they were everything to me. After photographing "the compulsory" image of the famous bridge, I went to work on the nets which eventually became a small publication in my personal image journal, Kokoro.

There is an abstract geometry in these nets that provided lots of possibilities for composition. Add to the nets the bamboo poles, the rope connecting the poles, the floats, and occasional floating debris — and the compositional possibilities magnify geometrically. At least they did so for me. My Chinese host was very interested in my progress as we worked our way up and back the half mile or so where these nets are. I think by the end of the morning he was starting to see it for himself because he also made some wonderful photographs there.
