Finding the Picture with Brooks Jensen

Finding the Gesture

Again, here I am in China with an opportunity to photograph lovely girls in traditional costumes. I did so. Nice snapshot, but nothing exciting in the least. Bad background, harsh light, intruding shadows — need I go on discussing the ways this image fails? But… the girl second from the left is making a gesture. Hmmm … what could I do with a gesture?

In the image below, this model (without me asking) struck this pose with a lovely gesture, shielding her eyes from the sun, but so graceful! Unknowingly, she gave me the answer I was looking for. Like a thunderbolt, it occured to me that grace was the thing I wanted to photograph. It was her hand, not her face, that offered the possibilities.

I then asked each of these models to allow me to photograph their hand and garment with the idea of making a short series concentrating on the idea of grace. Here is just one example of the results. The entire project can be seen in my Kokoro PDF publication.
