Finding the Picture with Brooks Jensen

Finding the Best Instant

An alleyway in one of the volcano villages in China. This cloth and the shadow it projected on the lava wall caught my eye, but this is a really dumb photograph. A moment later, a gust of wind picked up the cloth and extended the shadow down the wall. Now we're talking. I waited for a few more gusts of wind until I managed to catch a big one with a more interesting sense of movement and life. Not always easy to do with still photography, but in the finished image, there is action.

This is the best of the dozen or so exposures made during a big gust. I desaturated the color out of the wall to get rid of the slime green. This also left the cloth as the only thing with color — an effect I quite like in this image.
