There is no virtue in being an iconoclast just for the sake of being different. That said however, if the herd is pointing left, I typically find it best to look right. Nanzenji Temple was packed with Sunday tourists all making gazillions of snapshots of the vibrant fall leaves. I did so, too.

I love fall leaves as much as the next person, but the image that really captures Japan was one I made in total silhouette. Vibrantly colored fall leaves could just as easily be Vermont or any other forested landscape. But a black-and-white cutout of maple leaves is all Japan.
