Finding the Picture with Brooks Jensen

A preliminary example from China

Here is a place I passed on the way to dinner during my last trip to China. I've always been fascinated with Chinese calligrapy, so this street vendor's display caught my eye. As I often do, I snapped a quick shot just to have a record of the location. I knew this wasn't "art," but I thought it might be a place I could make art.

I simply walked across the street and concentrated on the largest of the calligraphy shapes. I wanted to preserve the translucence of the black ink — the calligrapher used a very watery ink so the blacks weren't solid and there was even some dripping. Here is the finished image.
